Anyone looking for a hotel in Düsseldorf is really choosing between quarters rather than between hotels. There are three realistic candidates for a city break: Friedrichstadt and Karlstadt (the quiet middle), the Old Town (the party tent) and the MedienHafen (the architecture book). We run a hotel in Friedrichstadt, and will still try to be fair about it.

Friedrichstadt & Karlstadt — the quiet middle

Set between Königsallee, Carlsplatz market and the Rhine, you are within walking distance of everything without listening to stag parties at night. Restaurants where people from Düsseldorf actually eat, the oldest market in the city around the corner, a minute to the Kö. If you want to see a great deal by day and sleep properly at night, this is the place. The drawback: if you are after hotel-bar noise until 3 am, you will not find it here.

The Old Town — the longest bar in the world

Two hundred and sixty pubs in half a square kilometre. Wonderful for one evening, wearing over three nights. Hotels in the Old Town are convenient for the nightlife, but weekend noise is real and earplugs are not a myth. Our suggestion: celebrate in the Old Town, sleep somewhere else. It is an eight-minute walk from Friedrichstadt.

MedienHafen — architecture on the water

Frank Gehry's leaning towers, the promenade, the sundowner bars. The hotels are modern and often cheaper than the centre, but you are living on the edge of things: the Old Town or the Kö are 20 to 25 minutes on foot or a tram ride away. Good for architecture enthusiasts and for business travellers with meetings in the harbour, less practical for ordinary sightseeing.

And for trade fair visitors?

The fairground is in the north, and people stay there only when price decides it. The U78 and U79 reach the fair from the city centre in about 25 minutes, and in the evening you are not stranded in trade fair territory. During the big fairs (boot, MEDICA, ProWein) the same rule applies everywhere: book three to six months ahead.
