Düsseldorf's Old Town is not called the longest bar in the world for nothing. We show you where the Altbier is genuinely good, and where to walk on past.
The Old Town is a question of timing. On a Saturday evening between 9 pm and 1 am it is a carnival without a date. On a Tuesday morning at 11 it is one of the loveliest old towns in Germany. We would recommend the latter.
What to see in the Old Town
The castle tower on Burgplatz — all that remains of the old palace.
St Lambertus with its twisted spire — opposite Carlsplatz.
The market square with the town hall and the Jan Wellem equestrian statue.
The Lambertus steps down to the Rhine — perfect for a sundowner.
Where the Altbier is genuinely good
Brauerei zum Schiffchen (founded in 1628, the oldest in the city), Uerige (classic, always full), Schumacher (for purists) and Im Füchschen (the cosiest room of the four). Avoid the chain brewhouses; the real Altbier houses brew their own.
